What it's for

This is a residual permethrin spray for inanimate objects. You shake it, spray from the right distance for the surface, let it dry, and the treatment keeps working: 2 weeks on treated clothing, up to 4 weeks for general pest control, and up to 8 weeks against house dust mites. It is odorless, which matters in occupied buildings, and the label states it will not stain surfaces or fabrics where water alone causes no damage. It is not a personal treatment — the label is explicit that it is not for use on humans, and if lice are on a person you use a product registered for direct application to people. This can treats the mattress, the furniture, the car seat and the coat, the things that cannot go through a washing machine.

NOTE This product carries no disinfectant kill claims. It is an insecticide, so the table lists pests rather than microorganisms. Contact time is not how a residual insecticide is specified — the label gives duration of control instead, which is what the contact-time column reports. Everything is ready-to-use aerosol; there is no dilution.
NOTE The "up to 4 weeks" figure is the label's general pest-control claim applied across the general pest list, not a per-species claim. Do not publish per-species durations.
NOTE Active ingredient, verbatim from the master label: "Permethrin* (CAS No. 52645-53-1)... 0.5%" / "Other Ingredients... 99.5%" / "Total 100.0%", with the footnote "Max. 55% (±) cis and Min. 45% (±) trans." Contains petroleum distillate. The physical can prints the active as 0.50% and other ingredients as 99.50% — the same figures.
NOTE Verbatim can-label claims include: "ODORLESS, FOR MATTRESSES AND FURNITURE. For use on clothing, mattresses, and wool and other proteinaceous fibers. Will not stain water-safe fabrics and surfaces."; "ONE CLOTHING TREATMENT LASTS 2 WEEKS."; "CONTROLS LISTED PESTS."; "KILLS ADULT LICE, AND NYMPHS AS THEY HATCH, on mattresses, garments, furniture and other inanimate objects."; "KILLS DUST MITES THROUGH CONTACT."; "KILLS AND REPELS MOSQUITOES AND TICKS."; "CONTROLS TICKS THAT TRANSMIT LYME DISEASE."; "FOR USE ON PREMISES TO CONTROL FLEAS AND TICKS."; "CONTROLS PESTS FOR UP TO 4 WEEKS."; "KILLS LICE AND THEIR EGGS on mattresses, furniture, car interiors and other non-washable items."; "CONTROLS HOUSE DUST MITES (Dermatophagoides spp.) for up to 8 weeks in carpets, curtains and on upholstery. Controls house dust mites that may cause asthma, rhinitis, watery eyes and sneezing."
NOTE Duration of control is not stated on the label for Blood Sucking Lice or Poultry Lice, so no contact_time value is published for those two rows.

How to use it

Directions

1. Shake well before using.

2. Test on an inconspicuous area first for discoloration or bleeding before treating the whole article.

3. Spray distance: 12 to 15 inches for general surfaces; 8 to 10 inches for fabrics such as clothing, furniture and mattresses.

4. Bed bugs: spray mattresses, particularly around tufts and seams. Take beds apart and spray into all joints. Treat baseboards, moldings and floors. Allow to dry, then cover the mattress with a cover and sheet — do not use the mattress without a cover. Retreat if infestation recurs, but not more than once every 2 weeks.

5. Lice and louse eggs: spray an inconspicuous area first to test for staining or discoloration, then spray from 8 to 10 inches, 3 seconds per square foot. Apply only to garments and bedding that cannot be laundered or dry cleaned. Do not use on sheets or pillowcases.

6. House dust mites: treat carpets, curtains, upholstery and mattresses from 8 to 10 inches. Allow to dry thoroughly before use, then vacuum the entire area. People with allergies should wear a dust mask and use a HEPA-filter vacuum, or have someone else do the vacuuming. One treatment lasts up to 8 weeks.

7. Clothing: hold the can upright about 6 to 8 inches from the fabric and spray with a slow sweeping motion to lightly moisten the surface. Continue over the entire outfit until a total treatment time of 60 seconds has elapsed. One clothing treatment lasts 2 weeks.

8. Mosquitoes and ticks: apply as directed, and use in conjunction with an insect repellent registered for direct application to skin. Wear a light-colored, long-sleeved shirt and long pants tucked into socks, and inspect the body daily for ticks.

9. Fleas and ticks on premises: remove and thoroughly clean or destroy pet bedding. Spray the pet's sleeping quarters, bed, entire floor and floor covering, paying attention to cracks and crevices, around baseboards, and window and door frames. Infested upholstered furniture may be treated after testing.

10. Space spray: do not enter until vapors have dispersed and the area is thoroughly ventilated. Surface spray: do not allow children or pets to enter until the spray has dried.

Not a contact-time product. It is a residual insecticide, so what matters is drying and duration: let sprayed surfaces dry fully before use or re-occupancy; clothing and fabric treatment lasts 2 weeks and holds through several machine washings; general pest control lasts up to 4 weeks; house dust mite control lasts up to 8 weeks; and do not retreat more than once every 2 weeks.

Works with

GERMICIDAL DISINFECTANT II 16.5 oz aerosol can standing on a locker room bench next to athletic mats
GERMICIDAL DISINFECTANT II

After a bed bug or lice treatment dries and the room is vacuumed, this phenolic aerosol disinfectant is what you use to disinfect and deodorize the same mattresses and upholstery. Two different jobs, same surfaces, and neither can substitute for the other.

NU-QUAT concentrate container on a counter in a childcare classroom, with a mop bucket and a spray bottle nearby
NU-QUAT

Neutral disinfectant cleaner concentrate for the floors and hard surfaces around a treated room. The insecticide handles the pests; NU-QUAT handles the routine sanitation that keeps the room usable in between.

DOUBLE D 5 oz total-release aerosol can standing upright on a raised surface in the middle of an empty closed room
DOUBLE D

Total-release deodorizing aerosol for the whole room after hours. A room that has had a bed bug problem usually has an odor problem too. It carries no pesticide claims, so it is not a substitute for this can.

Questions directors ask

It is registered with a full pest list, so yes, as a registered pesticide. The catch is the paperwork: this is a Claire product, so the SDS in your binder has to be Claire's, not Share's. Keep the can label and Claire's SDS on file, and note the establishment numbers (33595-MO-2, -MO-3, -MO-4) that appear after the can code.
